Go Golf Kauai Tips: Playing Wailua’s Seventeenth Hole
By. Mike Dauplaise, Golf writer

Wailua Golf Course
No. 17 – Par 3
(173/173/112)
This beautiful par-3 is the most photographed hole at Wailua. It plays from an elevated tee so you can see the gorgeous blue of the ocean behind the green. Three bunkers lie short of the target, with the two on the right getting a lot of visitors thanks to the trade winds.
Similar to the first hole, where it’s possible to drive through the fairway and onto the beach, too much club here can have the same result. There is a safe miss area to the right of the right bunker that is out of sight from the tee.
A stand of trees next to the tee prevents you from feeling the full effect of the trade winds, but take my word for it: they’re ready and willing to carry your shot to the right. By this point in the round, you should have an idea as to the wind’s strength that day.
The play here is to trust the effect of the wind, take a couple extra clubs, and aim left of the green. Hold your breath and hope the math works out in your favor.
