No. 3 – Par 3
Let the wind carry you to safety at Princeville Makai’s No. 3
This is one of those holes where you just know course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. figured he had to find a way to get a par-3 back here. The tee shot plays dramatically downhill and downwind to a wide green set hard against a retention pond looming short and right. Hanalei Bay provides a beautiful backdrop for this north shore gem.
You’ll want to take a club or two less than your yardage to account for the change in elevation and helping wind. Make an aggressive swing and hold your breath as you wait for the ball to confirm your club selection. Resist the urge to be a hero if the pin is in the front or right portions of the green, and just hit for the middle.
At first glance, you may not know which spot of short grass is your intended target. The green is on the left side of the valley, with sand traps front left and behind. The other closely mown areas to the right are tee boxes for the fourth hole.
